The Annual Great
Texas River Clean Up
SAN
MARCOS, Texas, Feb. 4, 2013 --The San Marcos River Foundation (SMRF), the Texas
River Protection Association and the Lion's Club will host the twenty-eighth
Great Texas River Clean Up of the San Marcos River on March 2 at 9:30 a.m.
In
the morning, all volunteers need to sign in at the San Marcos Lion’s Tube rental to receive gloves and trash bags to help clean the 90 miles of river. Volunteers
may pick up waste around the parks, creek banks and may paddle in a canoe to
clean the river. TG Canoes will be providing canoes for volunteers, but they
need to stay with the paddling group throughout the day.
When President of the Texas River Protection
Association and SMRF board member, Tom Goynes, was asked about last year’s
river cleaning he was concerned about the river’s missed spots. Goynes is hopeful
that this year will be easier to clean and continue to improve the river’s
condition compared to last year.
“The folks who attempted to clean the
section from my camp, from San Marcos River Retreat to Sculls Crossing, were
overwhelmed with trash," said Goynes. “This is the section that sees thousands
of drunken tubers every day during the warm months and the bottom of the river
is often covered with beer cans.”
Heritage Association, Lion’s Club and local
citizens formed SMRF in 1985 as a nonprofit corporation to preserve and protect
the San Marcos River. The established fund and donations have been helping protect
the river for over 25 years.
