FUN FACT: The acronym for the foundation is SMRF, pronounced smurf.
The San Marcos River Foundation was founded in 1985 primarily to protect the San Marcos River. Goals of the group are to keep it clean for recreational purposes and to protect the natural habitat of the water. The foundation formed as nonprofit corporation. Along with the creation of SMRF, local citizens and groups started a fund to be used for river protection. The fund has been growing for the past 25 years.
